Savory Cabbage Beef Bake is a hearty, comforting casserole that brings together tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, and a rich, savory sauce baked until perfectly melded. This dish is simple, filling, and ideal for family dinners, meal prep, or cold evenings when you want something warm and satisfying. It uses humble ingredients and transforms them into a nourishing, flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • 700 g ground beef
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano or thyme
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Dish

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Lightly grease a large baking dish with olive oil.

Step 2: Cook the Beef

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Step 3: Season and Add Sauce

Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, and oregano to the skillet. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to blend the flavors.

Step 4: Assemble the Bake

Spread half of the chopped cabbage evenly in the baking dish. Spoon half of the beef mixture over the cabbage. Repeat with the remaining cabbage and beef mixture, spreading everything evenly.

Step 5: Bake

Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes, until the cabbage is tender.

Step 6: Optional Cheese Topping

If using cheese, remove the foil, sprinkle the cheese over the top, and return the dish to the oven uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes until melted and lightly golden.

Step 7: Rest and Serve

Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips for Best Results

Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces so it cooks evenly. Letting the casserole rest before serving helps the layers set and makes serving easier. You can adjust seasoning to taste before baking.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Savory Cabbage Beef Bake on its own or with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or rice. A simple green salad pairs well to balance the richness.
