These Corn Dog Fries are a fun twist on classic corn dogs! Crispy strips of all-beef hot dogs are coated in a thick, savory cornmeal batter and fried until golden brown. Serve them hot with ketchup and yellow mustard for an easy snack, appetizer, or party treat.
Ingredients
- 5 all-beef hot dogs, cut lengthwise into strips
- 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup corn muffin mix
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup whole buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for serving
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- Ketchup, for dipping
- Yellow mustard, for dipping
How to Make Corn Dog Fries
1. Prepare the hot dogs
Pat the hot dogs dry with paper towels, then cut each one lengthwise into four strips. Arrange them in a single layer and freeze for at least 30 minutes, until firm.
2. Heat the oil
Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a medium Dutch oven or heavy pot. Heat over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
3. Make the batter
In a bowl, whisk together the corn muffin mix, egg, buttermilk, cornstarch, garlic powder, salt, and smoked paprika. Mix until you have a thick, smooth batter.
4. Coat the hot dogs
Working in small batches, dip the frozen hot dog strips into the batter. Let any excess batter drip back into the bowl.
5. Fry until crispy
Carefully place the battered hot dog strips into the hot oil. Fry for about 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until the coating is deep golden brown and crisp.
6. Drain and serve
Transfer the corn dog fries to a paper towel-lined plate or baking sheet to drain. Sprinkle with a little extra salt if desired.
Serve immediately with ketchup and yellow mustard for dipping. 🌭🔥
Tips for the Best Corn Dog Fries
- Freeze the hot dogs first: This helps the batter stick better during frying.
- Keep the oil hot: Aim for around 375°F so the coating becomes crisp without absorbing too much oil.
- Fry in batches: Adding too many pieces at once can lower the oil temperature.
- Serve immediately: They’re at their crispiest and most delicious when freshly fried.
- Try them with spicy mustard, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce for a different flavor.
