Ingredients
- 8 slices thick bread, preferably brioche or day-old bread
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking
- Powdered sugar, for serving
- Fresh strawberries, for serving
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, making sure both sides are coated without soaking the bread for too long.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt a little butter.
- Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crisp.
- Add more butter to the skillet as needed and continue with the remaining slices.
- Transfer the French toast to a serving plate.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh strawberries and maple syrup.
Tips
Use thick slices of brioche or slightly stale bread for the best texture. The bread will absorb the egg mixture without becoming too soggy.
For extra flavor, add a little orange zest or a touch of maple syrup directly to the egg mixture.
Serve warm for the best result.
