Baked Potato

Simple, fluffy, and perfectly comforting — a classic baked potato with crispy salted skin and a soft, steamy interior. This timeless side dish is endlessly versatile and can be loaded with butter, cheese, sour cream, or your favorite toppings for a satisfying meal or side that never fails.

INGREDIENTS
• 4 large russet potatoes
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 tablespoon coarse salt
• 2 tablespoons butter (for serving)
• 0.5 cup sour cream (optional)
• 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
• 2 tablespoons chopped chives or green onions (optional)
• Salt and black pepper to taste

STEPS

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with foil for easier cleanup if desired.
  2. Prepare the potatoes: Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt. Pat them completely dry with a towel.
  3. Season the skin: Rub each potato with olive oil, making sure the skin is fully coated. Sprinkle generously with coarse salt for a crispy, flavorful crust.
  4. Poke and place: Use a fork to poke several holes in each potato to allow steam to escape during baking. Place them directly on the baking sheet.
  5. Bake: Bake for 45–60 minutes, depending on size, until the skin is crisp and a fork slides easily into the center.
  6. Check doneness: The inside should feel soft and fluffy when gently squeezed (use an oven mitt).
  7. Fluff and fill: Slice each potato open lengthwise and gently fluff the inside with a fork.
  8. Serve: Add butter immediately so it melts into the hot potato, then top with sour cream, cheese, chives, salt, and pepper as desired.

NOTES
Tips: Russet potatoes are best because their starchy texture creates a light, fluffy interior. Rubbing oil and salt on the skin is key to achieving a crispy exterior. For extra-crispy skin, place the potatoes directly on the oven rack instead of a baking sheet. Avoid wrapping in foil, as this traps steam and results in soft skin instead of crisp texture. Cooking time varies depending on potato size, so always test with a fork for doneness. These baked potatoes can also be customized into full meals with toppings like chili, pulled chicken, bacon, or broccoli and cheese. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated in the oven or air fryer for best texture. Simple, hearty, and endlessly adaptable, the baked potato remains one of the most comforting staples in home cooking.
