Mom’s Tomato Soup Dip

Creamy, tangy, and comfortingly nostalgic — this old-fashioned tomato soup dip transforms simple pantry ingredients into a rich, velvety appetizer with deep tomato flavor and a smooth creamy finish. Perfect for crackers, toasted bread, or fresh vegetables, this cozy dip tastes like classic comfort food in scoopable form.

INGREDIENTS
• 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 1 can condensed tomato soup (10.5 ounces, undiluted)
• 0.5 cup sour cream
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
• 0.5 teaspoon salt
• 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
• 0.25 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
• 2 tablespoons green onions, finely sliced (optional)

STEPS

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes until soft and easy to mix. This ensures a smooth, lump-free base.
  2. Make the creamy base: In a large mixing bowl beat the cream cheese and sour cream together until completely smooth and fluffy.
  3. Add the tomato soup: Pour in the undiluted condensed tomato soup and mix until fully incorporated. The mixture should turn a rich orange-red and become silky and thick.
  4. Season the dip: Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika if using. Stir well so the flavors are evenly blended throughout the dip.
  5. Add freshness: Fold in the sliced green onions if desired for a mild fresh bite that balances the creamy tomato flavor.
  6. Chill the dip: Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld and the texture to thicken.
  7. Stir before serving: Mix again before serving to ensure a smooth, consistent texture.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Serve chilled with crackers, toasted baguette slices, pita chips, or crunchy fresh vegetables.

NOTES
Tips: Using condensed tomato soup straight from the can (without diluting it) is key to achieving the thick, rich dip consistency. Full-fat cream cheese provides the creamiest texture and balances the acidity of the tomato soup. Sour cream adds tanginess and lightens the richness so the dip doesn’t feel too heavy. For extra depth, add a pinch of Italian seasoning or a few drops of hot sauce. This dip can also be served warm — gently heat it in a saucepan or slow cooker for a cozy, melty party version. It pairs especially well with grilled bread, pretzels, or tortilla chips. The flavor improves after chilling for several hours, making it a great make-ahead appetizer for gatherings. Store tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days and stir well before serving again.
