This Old-Fashioned Shortcake is tender, buttery, and lightly sweet—just like Grandma used to make. Perfect as the base for strawberries and cream or enjoyed warm with a pat of butter, it’s a timeless dessert that never goes out of style.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
¾ cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the butter
Add the cold butter and cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add wet ingredients
Stir in the milk and vanilla extract just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
Shape the shortcakes
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it to about 1-inch thickness. Cut into rounds using a biscuit cutter and place on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake
Bake for 12–15 minutes, until lightly golden on top.
Serve
Serve warm or at room temperature.
✨ Tip: Split warm shortcakes and top with sweetened strawberries and freshly whipped cream for a classic dessert everyone loves.
