Old-Fashioned Farmhouse Coal Miner Bites

These Old-Fashioned Farmhouse Coal Miner Bites are inspired by hearty, working-class meals—simple, filling, and full of flavor. Made with seasoned beef, tender potatoes, and a crispy golden crust, they’re perfect as a snack, lunchbox treat, or comforting supper bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium potato, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried thyme or parsley
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional but traditional in many homes)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for coating)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1½ cups breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, diced potato, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until evenly combined. If using cheese, fold it in last.
  2. Shape the bites
Scoop small portions of the mixture (about 2 tablespoons each) and shape into compact balls or small oval patties. Press firmly so they hold together during cooking.
  3. Set up the coating station
Place the flour in one shallow bowl, the beaten eggs in a second, and the breadcrumbs in a third. Roll each bite first in flour, then dip into egg, and finally coat well with breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat the oil
In a deep skillet or heavy pan, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). The oil should be deep enough to cover the bites halfway.
  5. Fry until golden
Fry the bites in batches for 4–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until deep golden brown and cooked through. The potatoes inside should be tender.
  6. Drain and rest
Remove the bites with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Let them rest for 2–3 minutes before serving.
  7. Serve warm
Enjoy hot and crispy, served with mustard, gravy, or a simple tomato dipping sauce.

✨ Tip: For a baked version, brush with oil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 22–25 minutes, turning once for even browning.
