Creamed chipped beef on toast is a classic comfort food with rich, savory flavor and a creamy sauce that comes together quickly. Often called āSOS,ā this old-fashioned dish is simple, filling, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a hearty dinner.
Ingredients
Dried chipped beef 8 ounces
Unsalted butter 4 tablespoons
All-purpose flour 4 tablespoons
Whole milk 3 cups
Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon
Garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon
Toasted bread 6 slices
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the chipped beef
Separate the slices of dried chipped beef and cut them into bite-size pieces. If the beef is very salty, rinse it briefly under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
Step 2: Make the roux
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for about 1 minute, forming a smooth paste. Do not let it brown.
Step 3: Add the milk
Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Keep stirring as the sauce begins to thicken, about 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 4: Season and add beef
Add the black pepper and garlic powder to the sauce. Stir in the chipped beef pieces and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is heated through and the sauce is thick and creamy.
Step 5: Toast the bread
While the sauce simmers, toast the bread slices until golden and crisp.
Step 6: Serve
Spoon the creamed chipped beef generously over the toasted bread. Serve immediately while hot.
Tips
For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream or a pat of butter at the end.
Serve with eggs or hash browns for a complete meal.
Leftover creamed beef can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
