These Cozy Grandma’s Pilipit Shakoy are soft, fluffy Filipino twisted donuts—lightly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and coated in sugar for the perfect sweet bite. Warm, nostalgic, and comforting, they’re ideal for breakfast, merienda, or sharing with family and friends.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
- ½ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp salt
- Oil for frying
- Extra sugar for coating
Optional add-ins: vanilla extract, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Make the dough
In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead and rise
Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the shakoy
Divide the dough into small portions. Roll each into a rope and twist into the classic pilipit (twisted) shape.
5. Fry
Heat oil over medium heat. Fry the shakoy until golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.
6. Coat and serve
While still warm, roll the shakoy in sugar. Serve fresh and enjoy!
