Cheesy Hamburger Potato Casserole is a hearty, family-friendly dish layered with tender potatoes, seasoned ground beef, and a rich, creamy cheese sauce. It’s comforting, filling, and perfect for weeknight dinners or make-ahead meals.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 large potatoes)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
1. Preheat oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Cook the ground beef
In a large skillet cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the diced onion and minced garlic and continue cooking until the onion is soft. Drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley.
3. Prepare the cheese sauce
In a medium bowl whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and shredded cheddar cheese until smooth. This will form the creamy sauce that coats the potatoes.
4. Layer the casserole
Spread a thin layer of the sauce on the bottom of the baking dish.
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer.
Top with half of the cooked ground beef mixture.
Pour half of the cheese sauce over the beef and potatoes.
Repeat with the remaining potatoes, beef, and cheese sauce.
5. Add extra cheese
Sprinkle a handful of shredded cheddar cheese over the top for a bubbly, cheesy finish. Drizzle the melted butter on top to help the potatoes brown.
6. Bake
Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake an additional 20 to 25 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbling.
7. Rest and serve
Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the layers set and makes serving easier.
