Ingredients
1½ lbs ground beef
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
4ā5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
¾ cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9Ć13-inch baking dish.
Prepare the hamburger steaks
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Shape into evenly sized patties.
Layer the casserole
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish. Top with half of the sliced onions. Place the hamburger patties on top, then layer with the remaining potatoes and onions.
Make the gravy
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour evenly over the entire casserole.
Bake covered
Cover tightly with foil and bake for 60 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the beef is fully cooked.
Optional cheese topping
If using cheese, remove the foil, sprinkle cheddar over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10ā15 minutes until melted and lightly golden.
Rest and serve
Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before serving so the gravy thickens slightly.
⨠Tip: Serve with buttered green beans or a simple side salad for a complete, comforting meal.
