Crispy, golden, and smothered in creamy country gravy—pure Southern comfort in a skillet 🤍
Ingredients
For the steak:
- 4 cube steaks
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
For the gravy:
- 3 tbsp pan drippings
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt & black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prep the coating:
Mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl.
In another bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg. - Bread the steaks:
Dredge steaks in flour → dip in buttermilk → back into flour. Press well. - Fry:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove and keep warm. - Make the gravy:
Leave 3 tbsp drippings in the skillet.
Stir in flour, cook 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk.
Simmer until thick. Season with salt and lots of black pepper. - Serve:
Spoon gravy over the steaks and serve hot.
