Hawaiian-Style Chili

This Hawaiian-Style Chili is a sweet-and-savory twist on classic chili, combining hearty ground beef with tropical pineapple and warm spices. Comforting yet slightly sweet, it’s perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or when you want something a little different from traditional chili.

Ingredients

1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 cup crushed or small-diced pineapple (with juice)
1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

Brown the beef
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

Sauté aromatics
Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Build the chili base
Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, pineapple with juice, and kidney beans. Mix well to combine.

Season and simmer
Add the brown sugar, chili powder, paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir, bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low.

Slow cook for flavor
Cover and simmer for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili thickens and the flavors meld together.

Serve
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot.

Tip: This chili is delicious topped with shredded cheese or served over rice for a true island-inspired comfort meal.
