Sugar Snails are a cozy, old-fashioned treat made with soft dough rolled in buttery cinnamon sugar and baked into sweet, spiral-shaped pastries. Theyāre simple, comforting, and perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon snack with coffee.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Filling
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Optional Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and granulated sugar.
Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5ā7 minutes until foamy.
2. Make the Dough
Add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture and stir until combined.
Add the flour and salt gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough for about 5ā7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
3. Prepare the Filling
In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until smooth.
4. Shape the Sugar Snails
Roll the risen dough out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
Spread the cinnamon sugar filling evenly over the dough.
Roll the dough tightly from the long side into a log.
Cut into 12 equal slices.
5. Bake
Place the slices cut-side up in a greased baking dish, leaving space between them.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20ā25 minutes, or until golden brown and baked through.
6. Add the Glaze (Optional)
Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
Drizzle over the warm sugar snails.
7. Serve
Serve warm or at room temperature. Store leftovers covered.
