Church-Supper Wisconsin Cream Cookies

These old-fashioned cream cookies are a Midwestern classic often served at church suppers and family gatherings. Soft, tender, and lightly sweet, they’re filled with a simple cream frosting that makes them comforting and nostalgic.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Cream Filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Make the Cookie Dough
In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the egg and mix well.
Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla extract until smooth.

3. Add Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.

4. Bake the Cookies
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly golden but the tops remain pale.
Allow the cookies to cool completely.

5. Prepare the Cream Filling
In a bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth.
Add the powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
Mix until creamy and spreadable.

6. Assemble the Cookies
Spread a generous layer of cream filling on the flat side of one cookie.
Top with another cookie to form a sandwich.

7. Serve
Store in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for longer freshness.
