A classic, comforting dish made with savory dried beef in a rich, creamy white sauce, served over warm toasted bread. Simple, hearty, and ready in minutes.
Ingredients
Dried chipped beef (sliced into small pieces) ā 8 ounces
Butter ā 4 tablespoons
All-purpose flour ā 4 tablespoons
Milk ā 2 cups
Black pepper ā ½ teaspoon (or to taste)
Garlic powder (optional) ā ¼ teaspoon
Toasted bread ā 6ā8 slices
Instructions
Prepare the beef
Rinse the chipped beef under cold water briefly to remove excess salt. Pat dry and slice into small bite-sized pieces.
Cook the beef in butter
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chipped beef and sautĆ© for 1ā2 minutes to enhance the flavor.
Make the cream sauce
Sprinkle the flour over the beef and butter mixture. Stir continuously until the flour absorbs the butter and forms a smooth paste.
Slowly pour in the milk while stirring to prevent lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy.
Season the sauce
Add black pepper and garlic powder if using. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (chipped beef is already salty, so additional salt is usually not required).
Toast the bread
Toast slices of bread until golden and crisp.
Assemble and serve
Spoon the hot creamed chipped beef mixture generously over toasted bread slices. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
